This is one of those books that I enjoyed a bit, but couldn't really tell you what it was all about. I'm still wrestling as to what I should walk away from this book. It was a nice story, felt somewhat unfinished and frayed at the edges a bit, but I enjoyed it. It made me think about love, loneliness, regrets, sadness. It's about life in general. Sweet little story.

A clever novel that looks at race, adoption, family, acceptance, and love. Patchett is one of those authors that you read more for style than substance - her plot lens tends to be very narrow, so you're reading more for how she plays with language than anything else. Fortunately for her, she does it quite well, and her descriptions of Kenya's athleticism are especially well done.

Am a big Ann Patchett fan and began this book with high hopes. I admire Patchett's writing -- very crisp and clean. I liked that it all took place (with the exception of the last chapter) in 24 hours. Very vivid descriptions. Maybe the story itself didn't quite work for me.
