This is one of those books that I enjoyed a bit, but couldn't really tell you what it was all about. I'm still wrestling as to what I should walk away from this book. It was a nice story, felt somewhat unfinished and frayed at the edges a bit, but I enjoyed it. It made me think about love, loneliness, regrets, sadness. It's about life in general. A clever novel that looks at race, adoption, family, acceptance, and love. Perhaps a little far-fetched in the set-up, Patchett still manages to portray a totally normal if not conventional family: Irish Catholic former mayor of Boston, Mr Doyle; his wife Bernadette, who died 15 years earlier; their biological son Sullivan, 32, just back from Uganda, which he fled when he was caught diluting medicines to spread the wealth (and create profits, no doubt), a bit of a wild child and "failure"; Tip, ...more

Ordinary. Concerns a mother who reconnects with the boys she gave up for adoption years before. If fact, she never really left them. Little by little, verious truths about the characters emerge. It never really grabed hold of me.

I liked it better than that opera book (and I liked that a lot).

Patchett is one of those authors that you read more for style than substance - her plot lens tends to be very narrow, so you're reading more for how she plays with language than anything else. Fortunately for her, she does it quite well, and her descriptions of Kenya's athleticism are especially well done. ...more

Am a big Ann Patchett fan and began this book with high hopes. I admire Patchett's writing -- very crisp and clean. I liked that it all took place (with the exception of the last chapter) in 24 hours. Very vivid descriptions. Maybe the story itself didn't quite work for me. ...more
