My back doth protest for having to lug this paperback AND my ipad around for the past 2 days. Because if I could set it aside and NOT read it at every lull in my day, I would.

Out of the genres I poke my nose into, dystopian has had a pretty consistent streak for me. Though to be fair, I am coming in very late in the party and everyone else has had the taste of the kool-aid flavors so I'm picking my reads based on reviews. OMG! This book was so good! The movie was so good (and pretty true to the book)! Tris and Four are smoking hot in the book! Four is smoking hot in the movie! They held hands! They kissed!

They are going to live happily ever after. Right? RIGHT?!

Okay, now that my inner teen fangirl has had her say and used up her exclamation point quota for the month, it’s time to be serious. Oh wait. Hold on. I just thought about Theo James again.

For real now. Divergent was on my TBR list for three years. I boug OMG! This book was so good! The movie was so good (and pretty true to the book)! Tris and Four are smoking hot in the book! Four is smoking hot in the movie! They held hands! They kissed!

For real now. Divergent was on my TBR list for three years. I bought it during my bout with Chronic Dystopian YA Fatigue Syndrome (look it up) and I just could not bring myself to read it then even though everyone was raving about it. I am so glad I took that hiatus because the hype around the genre has died down and now Divergent feels fresh and new in a way that Matched and Delirium didn’t three years ago. Seriously, I volunteer as Divergent!

The world building was really good even though, like many dystopian worlds, the rules don’t make any sense to me. I know that’s the point but still. (I didn’t mind that the movie dumbed down the rules and the test/“you can choose us but we may not choose you” interplay. All of the faux choice makes more sense in the movie.) I also like that Divergent is set in Chicago. People still use the L train after “the war.” Pretty cool.

Tris’s time in Dauntless, training and making friends and enemies, was the best part of the book. The fact that Four plays a major role here in no way biases my opinion but, okay, it does. Four is just… He just is. Tris and Four have amazing chemistry. They held hands for 10 seconds and I swooned for more than 10 seconds so that should tell you something. That said, this book, even without Four, would have been a winner for me because the absolute best parts involved Tris’s inner struggle with finding herself and coming to terms with all of her different sides. It turns out Tris is kind of your typical teenager with a functioning brain and feelings. She’s also a bad ass.

Side note - The entire time I was reading I kept imagining Tris as this homeschooled kid who wasn’t socialized outside of her immediate family (and her internet is very strictly monitored or they don’t have WiFi. I don’t know. I’m not a writer) but she always felt like she didn’t really fit in with them so she secretly applies to college really far away. She gets a makeover, decides to reinvent herself at college and pledges some kind of daredevil frat with the most intense hazing period ever. I’m just saying if this isn’t already the premise of a YA/NA series, it should be. You’re welcome.

So, I totally went ape-shit cray on this book. I ravaged each and every single page with a fury that would make your grandmama blush, and followed it up by going even more ape-shit cray on all things Comic Con 2013 / Divergent, the movie / Casting / Google Images etc. Could(&)NOT get enough!

I'm not sure why, but the summary of this book did not appeal to me. I wasn't really wanting to read it, but I've heard so many amazing things about it, I thought well why not. I am so glad I did. This book was amazing. I couldn't put it down. So exciting. I can't wait to read the next one in the series. I loved the characters. I either loved to love them or loved to hate them. ...more
