Forbidden in Buddy Read Zone

This story is one that I will never forget. It is about Forbidden love; but it is also about so much more than that. Lochan and Maya are 18 and 16 years old, and have more on their plates than even the majority of adults do. They are caring for their three younger siblings because the teen's moth Family: "the most important thing of all.

This story is one that I will never forget. It is about Forbidden love; but it is also about so much more than that. Lochan and Maya are 18 and 16 years old, and have more on their plates than even the majority of adults do. They are caring for their three younger siblings because the teen's mother is an alcoholic and absent for a good majority of the time. They have had to grow up fast, and learn to work together to keep the household running, and make sure the siblings have food in their bellies and love that they don't get from their mother. Not only does Lochan carry much of the responsibilities on his shoulders, he also suffers from an extreme panic disorder that keeps him isolated from all of his peers. With all of these factors in play, it is no wonder Lochan and Maya rely so much on each other for support, comfort, and happiness. They live their life in constant fear that the authorities will come and seperate all of the siblings. This fear has made it so all of the kids have learned to keep the secret of their mother's alcoholism and neglect. Through all of this dysfunction, Maya and Lochie have fallen "in love" with one another. They know this is wrong, and try very hard to not act on their attraction. Temptation becomes too hard to fight, and they begin a very dangerous relationship with one another.

This book was haunting, and had me in tears a few times while reading it. My heart broke for Lochie especially, as he was so determined to make his siblings lives as best as possible. He tried so very hard and even with his panic disorder, he fought for those kids when he needed too. I can totally see and understand how Maya and him ended up attracted to one another. They were each others support system, and they had to rely on each other to maintain the lies they lived and the heavy duty responsibility they both had to run a household. Their mother certainly didn't nurture them nor did the father, so they looked to one another for what they were lacking from the outside world. Their home was outside the norm, and any outsider would just be a threat, so it was safer for Maya and Lochan to keep others out and rely only on each other. The author did an amazing job showing just how hard it was for the teens to give in to their forbidden attraction. They took it very seriously and they knew it was wrong; but they loved each other so much it was literally eating them up inside. It was heart wrenching to watch the journey that Maya and Lochie were on because I knew deep down it probably wasn't going to end all happy and wonderful.
I officially have a book hangover after reading this story; but I am so glad that I did. It was an extremely intense read but one you don't want to miss. I won't ever forget this story or the characters in it. It will always have a special place in my heart.

I know my five star rating will be contradictory to my review, but this is how I feel. I rated Forbidden five stars because it moved me tremendously. I have read many, many books since this one and I still can't stop thinking about this emotional story. This book was agonizing, heartbreaking, and almost too much for me to take. This story was both beautiful and devastating. Utterly heart-wrentching is an understatement. The nature of the subject that the story dealt with made it a difficult read at times... emotionally. This book is not for everyone, as other reviewers have said, and this book was not for me. I should not have read it, and I most certainly should not have read it when I was only 14 years old.

It was end of August in 2010, and my family and I went back-to-school shopping at STC. I remember we went to Walmart to buy my brother pencil crayons and markers - because a kid in elementary school goes through them like a chain smoker does a pack of cigarettes. It was end of August in 2010, and my family and I went back-to-school shopping at STC. When we were younger, my mom would hide stashes of pencil crayons because we would end up losing them and would constantly need more. So we went to Walmart to do that. I started wandering, and I ended up in the book section. I read the synopsis of pretty much all the books there, then borrowed my dad's phone - because unlike 10 yr olds today, I didn't have a phone when I was 14 - to write down the shortlist I'd made. Once I came home, I put all the books on that list on hold at the public library. This was one of those books.

I got the book pretty quick and unassumingly, I started reading it. And then I kept going wtf every couple pages because I couldn't understand what was going on. Literally nothing in that book made sense. I remember the two characters in the book were dancing - and that scene kept reminding me of our living room back in Montreal, which was big and light and airy and so pretty. I don't know why, it just did. That's what stuck with me all these years.

So I read most of the book, and then near the end I gave up and read the last chapter/epilogue whatever there was and called it a day. I don't remember much of anything else in the book (view spoiler) I kept thinking how weird and disturbing this book was. I basically ranted about it to all my reader friends at that time, and I don't think any of them actually read it.

Why am I writing a review for this book 5 years later? I came across an article recently where a brother and sister are in love - somewhere in Europe (and hey, I read it the night before my International Relations final, so it counted towards studying :P) - and I immediately remembered this book. I looked it up again and most of my GR friends gave it really high ratings whereas I left it with a measly star. Reading that article made me feel like I needed to explain myself for some reason. And here is the explanation.

I'm not sorry for my reaction to this book. I still won't read it, because I know it's not my cup of tea and I'm scared I may like it or I may hate it again - and both of those options scare me. So I won't read it at all, but I'd really appreciate it if anyone could give me the summary - so that almost 20 yr old me can look at it from a new perspective and potentially understand it. ...more

I read this story nearly two years ago, and it is still one that I think about from time to time. When you read the summary you think, "No, I don't want to read a story about that!" but it's so much more. This book will make you feel. It will make you cry. It will rip your heart out from your chest and stomp on it until it's in a million pieces.

This author weaved a realistic story. I completely believed the environment that Maya and Lochan lived in. The characters felt real to me as did their suffering due to the bleakness of their lives. I liked that the book wasn't salacious. Better than many others, this author showed the gloomiest of lives without being over the top or coming across as disingenuous.
