What on earth did I just read

This book was recommened by a lot of my friends on here. I did it as a buddy read with several people. It was a GREAT book! It was well written and captivating. The start of it had a lot of fashion and talking about pink. It kind of lost me. [image error] photo 22_zps5eec1d67.png

But I hear that dies down and actually has somewhat of a reason behind it. But that was my only complaint.

For some reason, this made me laugh uncontrollably:

You are holding the spear that pierced Christ's side as he hung on the cross," he said.

I nearly dropped it. "This thing killed Jesus?" I exclaimed, dismayed.

This was my third attempt to finish this book (last June then September then now). It took me that much of time to build tolerance against Mac. I was hesitant to read this series because I strongly dislike faeries. I do not have the patience for their trickery, riddles and games. “Let’s cause some mischief just because we can” does not make sense to me. Thank goodness for all of the great reviews otherwise I would have dismissed this as another one of those kinds of Fae books. I have not seen much tomfoolery from the Fae yet and the world building has been very good. I like Moning’s writing style and her descriptions are gi 3.5 stars

I have not seen much tomfoolery from the Fae yet and the world building has been very good. I like Moning’s writing style and her descriptions are giving my imagination a workout, which is crazy because this is just the first book, so if I am horrified by the Fae she describes in this one, I can’t imagine what’s coming in the next four books.

That said, this book was slow going when it was just Mac focused on finding her sister’s murderer but picked up when she partnered with Barrons. Coincidentally, this is also when I warmed up to Barrons. His many barbs about Mac’s appearance were a highlight. And I know that is probably his version of pulling her pigtails on the playground because that’s how boys express love but, so far, I don’t see the romantic chemistry between Mac and Barrons. (view spoiler) They could be my new favorite buddy cop duo though. Or if you told me they end up being Dublin’s own Luke and Leia, I would not be surprised. (view spoiler)

While the verdict is still out on Barrons (I’m very intrigued though), I really like Mac. Under that OMGPINK! exterior, she is smart with common sense and also very funny:

“I had a sudden dismal view of my future, of being led around and asked incessantly, like one of those Verizon commercials, Do you feel sick now?”

A lot of the reviews complain about Mac being superficial and the focus on her clothes and nail polish. Her frivolousness did not bother me as it makes sense for this part of her journey. She's the 22-year old baby of the family, who wasn’t really asked or expected to apply herself. But when faced with tragedy and given a purpose, Mac 1.0 was a pretty determined young lady who would not quit in her quest. In fact, she adapted and made the move to Mac 2.0 pretty quickly. I cut Mac some slack. So what if she cares about her nail polish. I say whatever gets you through those long nights fighting some pretty disgusting creatures. My only question is why did the rainbow outfit make the final packing list to go investigate her sister’s murder? Maybe the rainbow outfit is Mac’s equivalent of always packing a swimsuit just in case there is a pool. Mac, like Buffy, is prepared for every fashion occasion.

Reading a book in one day has to tell ya something, I am intrigued about Barron's...what the hell....who the hell and will Mac ever find out. Can't wait to learn all the hidden secrets as this series unfolds :) ...more

I'm actually at a lack of words at this moment and may need to revise my review. I have heard awesome things about this series and I will truely stay the course, I just felt this book was a little boring, especially in the begining. I felt like I was sitting in a paranormal history class, lol and that I should get my notebook out and start taking notes and preparing for a fae hunter 101 quiz. The book did get better as I went on and there actually was a little action in the end.

I did like this book but I think it's one where you need to read more of the series to really get into it and I'm not sure this book would tempt me to want to continue reading if it weren't for having GR friends who love the series.

In the 'pro' camp I'd say that Mac is a main character I really like. I normally like strong female leads and she fits this bill although not in the conventional way. She is strong because she's not ashamed of who she is, even if that involves pink nail varnish and ra I did like this book but I think it's one where you need to read more of the series to really get into it and I'm not sure this book would tempt me to want to continue reading if it weren't for having GR friends who love the series.

In the 'pro' camp I'd say that Mac is a main character I really like. I normally like strong female leads and she fits this bill although not in the conventional way. She is strong because she's not ashamed of who she is, even if that involves pink nail varnish and rainbow coloured outfits. She's also stubborn, she knows what she wants and isn't going to forget what her purpose is.

I was also pleased that the author didn't make the transition from ignorance for Mac to quick. It's frustrating when a main character is thrown into a new world and just accepts it and adapts to it immediately. In this book we get the sense that Mac isn't comfortable with it yet, she's undecided whether she's embracing or rejecting it and in the meantime is focused only on Alina.

In the 'against' camp however, I found that so much was unexplained that I found myself a bit bewildered. It's telling that the author felt the need to add a glossary at teh end and periodic stock taking in the form of Mac's journal. I appreciate having everything explained is not desirable and can often interfere with a story but in this I fet that information overload hadn't been avoided yet I still felt lost at times. This was particularly frustrating given the first person past tense. The Mac telling the story knows more than we're being told, I found that odd. I guess I'm used to first person present. All that 'later I came to see..' annoyed me.

Barrons was an interesting character but not exactly likable and I found that could be said about most of the man other characters introduced. Not much was learnt about them.

In summary I'd say that this book felt like merely an introduction to the series for me rather than a well rounded novel in it's own right. Lots of little tastes of what I expect will come later. I liked the main character but fuond the plot lacking in clarity and excitement with a somewhat anticlimactic ending. However, it seems like it may be a rich world that if I take the time to get to know I still hope could hold some interesting stories. ...more

Damn it to h*ll!!! I stayed up late to finish this and still no answers!! Gah!!

Loved, loved, loved, Barrons, but now I have a huge list of questions with no answers!!
