I picked this one with full of excitement with my darling buddy, Harriett! We are so looking for a dark angst read!
And this is nothing close to what we have imagined!

This started slow and then it just moved on to be so dull and BAM boring!!!!!!!!!!!

This book is totally not my kind of reading! It was full of rant and nonsense without any clear storyline.

Let's see, Anthony Rawlings is 45 and kidnaps Claire. And after awhile, she falls in love with him and marries him!!

I’m struggling to find words because my nerves are so shot after finishing this. I don’t know if I should be scared and concerned that I enjoyed Every. Frickin’. Page. of this book or just attribute this unnerving and confused feeling I have right now on the brilliant writing and sick and twisted mind of the author Aleatha Romig. I mean, seriously, who thinks up this shit? (Excuse my French!)

I kid you no DAMN IT! All the reviews were right. You probably will need therapy after reading this book. I’m struggling to find words because my nerves are so shot after finishing this. I don’t know if I should be scared and concerned that I enjoyed Every. Frickin’. Page. of this book or just attribute this unnerving and confused feeling I have right now on the brilliant writing and sick and twisted mind of the author Aleatha Romig. I mean, seriously, who thinks up this shit? (Excuse my French!)

I kid you not, be prepared to be completely consumed by this dark, depressing and extremely INTENSE, panic inducing read from the second you read the first page.

Talk about playing with your emotions. The ENTIRE book had me struggling with my emotions. You will find yourself screaming at the heroine, Claire, to RUN! All the while… You KNOW you’re supposed to hate Anthony. You KNOW want to shake some sense into Claire and figure a way to get her out of Anthony’s grasp… but the funked up part is… sometimes (on Anthony’s “good days”) you’ll have hope for them! You’ll find yourself smiling! You’ll want them to work it out! You’ll think, “Awww, that was nice. Maybe there’s hope after all!” And the second you realize you just thought that- you’ll be chastising yourself for even thinking they should be together because you KNOW it’s totally and completely 100% wrong! And it will scare you and question your own sanity all the while question both Anthony and Claire’s.

As far as the plot, I really don’t want to say anything. There’s so much at happens, so many red flags, so many bat-shit-cray-cray things that happen in this book that I couldn’t talk about one thing without possibly spoiling something you need to just read first hand for yourself. So let’s just say that Aleatha Romig is a genius and she will no doubt keep you on edge and up into the wee hours of the morning devouring this book.

With that said, the ending will also leave you with your nerves shot, heart panicky (and broken), and dying for more! I’m glad I read this after the sequel Truth was already released. Believe me, the second I get dinner on the table and kitchen cleaned I will be starting it. And seriously. Still slapping myself because I am curious if Claire actually gets back with Anthony. I KNOW! I’m a sick, twisted girl! But Anthony is the master manipulator and you can only imagine something like that happening! UGH! Why did this book have to mess with my pretty little head so much?!

One word to describe how I am feeling after reading this book: Agitated

My blood is boiling.
My heart is racing.
I am breathless.
I am stunned.
Most of all, I am completely emotionally drained.

And, because of all of the emotions listed above, I must give this book 5 stars for grabbing a hold of me so tightly.

I went into this book with trepidation because I had read status updates and reviews with the phrases “mind blowing”, “I hate him”, “incredibly intense” and “full of twists”. Even after reading those words, I never saw it coming. I thought I was prepared; I wasn’t.

This book brought on emotions I haven’t felt while reading a book for a long time. I found myself holding my breath during most of the story, praying for a different outcome again and again, and honestly feeling almost ill with a gut wrenching reaction to what unfolded. It is a rare occurrence to feel so emotionally tied to a character in a book. Claire Nichols just took me on one hell of an emotional journey. This is so hard to explain without giving away too much: I feel a bit ashamed that I could understand her actions and emotions. I couldn’t help but be pulled into the inner-workings of her broken mind and spirit. The destruction and rebuild of her psyche were both heartbreaking…but completely fascinating as well. Claire vacillated between despair, fear and hope and I was right there with her. Her survival instincts forced me to see through her eyes the justifications for most of her actions and her feelings of love and hate. It is easy for me to sit back and judge her feelings (and I did at times) but the reality of her situation was sobering. How could one person be so incredibly strong but seem so completely paralyzed? After finishing this book I have a better idea. In the end, she was not a puppet- she was a competitor in the cruelest of head games where survival and hope were the only options.

I won’t comment on Anthony Rawlings – I am still coming to grips with his character (and the loss of the possibility of redemption -sick, but I actually had a sliver of hope). Trilogies always give me a sense of hope for the evolution of our characters– this will require nothing short of a miracle…we’re talking the MOTHER of all miracles.

One last comment: Aleatha Romig is an incredible writer. The beginning of each chapter brought the anticipation of another twist in the web she so cleverly continued to weave. She made me feel like I was walking on eggshells right along with our heroine. The complexity and development of her characters was supreme. Her detailed descriptions took me around the world and at times kept me feeling suffocated and isolated as well.
Once I cool down and gather my strength, I will continue on this journey with the second book, Truth. Again, I go in with trepidation of what is to come and how I will survive this next round with Anthony Rawlings.

Update seven hours later after finishing this book and writing this review: I am still extremely agitated. Sleep was elusive last night and my head refuses to let go of this story. Do yourself a favor and don't finish this book near bedtime...it will dominate your peace.

In many ways, the destructive and dysfunctional marriage at the center of this story reminds me of the one in "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn. "Consequences" about the downward spiral and ruination of Claire Nichols at the hands of her wealthy and secretly sadistic husband, Anthony Rawlings. It was a compelling read but I also felt a little let down this book. It had potential to be amazing as a psychological thriller but the main problem is that the "thrills" are only in the very beginning and at In many ways, the destructive and dysfunctional marriage at the center of this story reminds me of the one in "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn. It had potential to be amazing as a psychological thriller but the main problem is that the "thrills" are only in the very beginning and at the very end of the novel. I would say that the other 80-90% in the middle is mostly repetitive filler.

Imo, this story should have been about the abduction of Claire. The book only briefly mentions that it has happened after the fact, but none of it was actually depicted or detailed in the story. It also should have been about her "ORDEAL" of being held captive and forced/coerced into an abusive marriage while publicly having to keep up the facade of a happy married couple. The word "ordeal" is in all caps because the reader never truly feels her "terror" at being kidnapped, held captive, beaten and raped. The books says that it happened, but she seems rather nonchalant about it all. Mainly because 300+ pages are devoted to describing lazy days by the pool or the lake, shopping trips, spa visits, name brands, fancy cars, fine dining and jet-setting to lavish vacations in exotic locales over and over again. Then there is also the fact that she had multiple opportunities to either tell someone or escape or at least attempt to yet she never does. There is one sentence about Stockholm Syndrome thrown out there at the reader as a possible lame justification, but it's never explored any further than that one sentence and is never mentioned or alluded to again. Lastly and most importantly, it should have been about the mystery surrounding Tony's true motivations for taking her in the first place. The reader gets very few glimpses into the psychology of Tony. Other than a few brief flashbacks intended to foreshadow, the mystery itself was rushed and packed into the last couple of pages. 300+ pages of shopping sprees and name brands and approximately 8 pages of mystery and revelation in the final chapter. Not only that....the story has the audacity to not even be finished because it's a trilogy!

I'm going to read the next installment because I have a compulsion to see a story through to the end but I think I've been spoiled by writers like Stephen King who manage to get their psychological thrillers told from start to finish in one installment.

OH MY FRIKIN GOODNESS! This book is awesome; there are no words to accurately describe how FRIKIN AMAZING IT IS!
I hate Tony yet I also love him. I'm soooo conflicted. HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO CLAIRE TONY?! HOW?! I know you love. But, how could you do that to her? Whats the point of what your doing I dont understand! ARGGHHHH!!!!!
I have to get my hands on Truth (the next book in the series). Otherwise I'll go insane; I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. And also WHY in the frikin world is Tony such ...more

Ok, let's get to it...

I didn't know what to expect from this book. I thought this was another troubled guy who falls in love with an innocent girl and they have their HEA (as all the other books I've recently been reading). So going into it with this mind frame, you can understand why I was debating whether or not I should continue reading. I didn't like both the H/h and never did I once relate to either of them (well, exept for Claire at the end).

Tony, is a man of many faces and basically has the world in his hands. He's successful, rich, handsome and charming. But the truth is, he is one effed up a-hole! I didn't have to read past the first page to understand that. But apparently Claire needed the entire book to realize it. I don't care if he showed a bit of compassion, sincerity or remorse during the time you've been with him...put your hands on me and force me to do things, I will cut yo ass!

And let's be honest...Claire is one dumb cookie. She had so many opportunities to get away, but I guess she liked Catherine and her lake too much. I could understand she was hesitant at first because Tony was ruthless, but COME ON!!! (view spoiler) I was rolling my eyes throughout the entire time she was having her inner monologue. But I guess you needed a dumb character in order to continue with the story.

Here's where I had a change of heart - towards the end of the book and the BIG revelation, I realized the author flipped the switch and took hold of me the way Tony had a hold on Claire. All the planning, the lies, the links that tied everything together...I felt as stupid and submissive as Claire. I didn't know what to say after that (keep in mind, I thought this was a "girl reforms boy and lives HEA" with him). But I'm only on the first book so anything can happen...I'm hoping not.

I will be reading the next book cause I need to know this girl can take back control of her life (view spoiler) and what she has in store for herself and others surrounding her.

Overall, 3.5 stars. I would have rated it higher, but the stupidity of the main character along with the majority of the book dragging dropped it significantly. ...more

HELL NO! This is one serious mind mincer..... and I'm being polite!
This is what they call a psychological thriller. Heavy on the psycho ......and logic just left the galaxy. I won't divulge plot details and spoil the fun. Do go ahead thinking this is alpha male bad boy brooding control freak and timid clueless damsel then I though maybe captive twist with stockholms syndrome turns happy ever after but I was soooooooo wrong!

Oh my this book had me from start from finish I loved Anthony I hated Anthony one minute his nice and loving next well hard and mean and Claire wow sweet and caring and terrified this book will make you want to pull your hair out and also feel good but sad so good read and follow the journey of Anthony and Claire.

I rarely get surprised by books as I can almost guess the end from the beginning. This kept me at the edge of my seat, awake all night muttering expletives. Tho a dark read, all the twists and turns kept me wondering throughout the whole series.
