"Perspective is a wicked creature."

I so understood the full meaning of this on the re-read. Referring to the merry band of first-timers in our buddy-read! It was a lot of fun doing it!

Otherwise, the stars are again 5! Even more wickedly stronger now!

There is so much that I love in this book! And things that I don't! :D

Plot: Overall, the majority of Red Rising was kind of boring (for me), there were long moments when Darrow was just giving us a report of what's happening - who did what, who died, how angry/sad/happy he is etc. His voice felt really detached and unemotional. BUT! This book kept surprising me! And I LOVED it! Just when you think you know what's going on and where everything is heading, the plot slaps you in the face. BUT! This book kept surprising me! And I LOVED it! Just when you think you know what's going on and where everything is heading, the plot slaps you in the face. The rest of the book, that wasn't just a list of events, was dynamic, action-packed and kept me on my toes. The last 10% were worth it!
A Summary:
0-17% - made me fall asleep, was on the verge of quitting, predictable, (view spoiler)
17 - 35-ish % - Pure awesomeness, it's like you've grabbed another book, great plot twist, cool world building.
up till 90-ish% - boring, repetitive. Hunger Games/Ender's Game.
91-99% - YESSSS! YES! YES!

Protagonist: I could not relate to Darrow. Unfortunately, that was my biggest problem with Red Rising. He wasn't evil, but it felt like every good deed was purely for the purpose of furthering his goals. (view spoiler)

Conclusion: Red Rising is probably one of the most mature and complex YA books I've read so far and Pierce Brown is full of surprises. Despite everything I didn't like, I still want to read the sequel :) Maybe not right away though. ...more

I read an early edit of this book almost a year ago and LOVED it!. Now I've never read Enders Game and couldn't get trough Hunger Games, which people who have read those books said it sounded like when I was gushing to them about this book I'd read and thought was BRILLIANT!

I don't know about those books. I just know that this story was AMAZING! I would recommend to anyone, even if they aren't into Fantasy.
