A sprawling epic in miniature. Young children can feel a real sense of accomplishment to read this, though it's not long nor particularly difficult.
'Twas the Night Before Christmas: or Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas was published in 1822 or '23, depending on source, so our vision of the jolly old man in red is 200 years old. This book, by the same author as The Wizard of Oz, details the origins and adventures of Santa Claus. It is an interesting description, differing in some ways from the now-held ideas of Santa. He is shown to be a good man, looking to bring joy to all children. He starts small, near him, and then reaches out further and further. The book is written from a narrator's perspective, so there are small asides to explain details that might be overlooked.

I adore this book and pick up something new every time I read it. It never loses its magic for me.

What a charming, delightful, and magical holiday story. This will be part of my Christmas tradition going forward as it encompasses the essence of the holiday spirit.
