To be honest, I never read nor watch Peter Pan (I didn't count Finding Neverland, which I watched and loved, since it was a story behind the writing of Peter Pan). So I don't know the detail of it, though I'm aware of what it is about. Therefore I try to read this book with clear mind, without trying to compare with the original version, “Sometimes I think that maybe we are just stories. Therefore I try to read this book with clear mind, without trying to compare with the original version, as I usually do when I read a retelling.

However what I thought will be a piece of cake since I'll see it as a brand new story was completely wrong. I was confused with it, especially in the first part of the book. I didn't know who is who, and what connection between the characters. I don't know why but they felt alien for me. I even have to look at Wikipedia to make me feel more familiar with the characters. It helped a lot and made my reading much easier.

I loved the writing. I think it's beautiful. There are parts where I read more than once just because I really liked it and wanted to really feel it. So my confusion wasn't because of the writing. The story is told from first POV, but instead of the main character, Tiger Lily, I got Tinker Bell who tells the story. It's quite rare for me to read a story with first POV with the narrator who isn't the main character. Although at first it felt odd, it was like I stalked Tiger Lily all the time to know her story, instead of be there in the story, I kinda liked it too because at the same time it felt different. At least different from stories I usually read. So again my confusion clearly wasn't because of the POV.

I think it was mostly because it was quite hard for me to connect with the main characters, Tiger Lily and Peter. It's like they keep everything for themselves they don't let me know them. And add it with the way Tink tells the story. I felt her mind keep wondering around and jumbling with so many things it's like she cannot decide which one she should tell first. Her story is mostly back and forth in flashback in unpleasant way, especially in first part.

But the more I read, the more I used to all of it and I can finally bear it, even enjoyed it. While first part was mostly boring with slow pace, the second one was more interesting. Tiger Lily and Peter aren't that hard to connect to anymore. And there are a lot of things happen that made me love Tiger Lily even more. I also really like the lost boys and especially, Tiger Lily's father, Tik Tok, and Tiger Lily's bestfriend Pine Sap, though he's so quiet I barely hear him talk.

But what surprised me was this story was more than just a retelling, though I keep wondering when the story turn to be a Peter Pan retelling because I think 70% of it was more a prequel than a retelling. I really liked how the author described the impact of "the foreigner" for the Neverlanders. It was just so sad since I know that it was inevitable.

All the while I kept thinking that I'll give it 3 stars but then the last 30% changed my mind. Although the ending was bittersweet, I think it was the best for the characters. And it was perfect for me.

This book is unique in many ways. Mostly, to me it is a long poem that faces the subtle brutalities of letting go, and moving on. We simply cannot hang on to all our loves; times change as they say, and the revolutions of the wheel of fate are often wrenching. And yet, they're real as much as they're unavoidable, and they shape us. Hard to capture the gossamer thread of living through that in a book, but Anderson did just that. asem tapi ya gitu lah

kalau mau dipersingkat, ini cerita ttg seorang gadis dg keunikan yg dia punya, tidak meliputi karakter gadis pada umumnya.....
