What a powerful read, loved every letter of this story of self discovery in hard times. I could not put this book down and read it very fast. Great book!

I could go back in the direction I had come from, or I could go forward in the direction I intended to go.

so this book is a biography memoir about a young woman who feels lost and in turmoil after the death of her mother. as she is grieving, she lets her life spin out of control, sabotaging everything dear to her. she starts doing drugs. she cheats on her husband even though she loved him. at least she realizes that she needs to get her life back on track, and she decides the way to do this is b I could go back in the direction I had come from, or I could go forward in the direction I intended to go.

so this book is a biography memoir about a young woman who feels lost and in turmoil after the death of her mother. as she is grieving, she lets her life spin out of control, sabotaging everything dear to her. she starts doing drugs. she cheats on her husband even though she loved him. at least she realizes that she needs to get her life back on track, and she decides the way to do this is by hiking a good chunk of the pacific crest trail on her own. i understand she was grieving, but she was quite unlikeable in the beginning of the book and it was so slow and depressing, i almost didnt bother to continue reading. but, being that it was a book club pick, the premise of her hiking a good chunk of the pacific crest trail on her own, and the fact that it was promoted during gilmore girls - a year in the life made it seem interesting enough to at least try to read it. as the book went on, it did get more interesting and i found that i became more invested to hear the story.

one thing that bothered me a little is that she spent so much time making such a big deal out of hiking the pacific crest trail, when in reality due to inclement and unpredicted weather, she spent almost as much time bypassing/ diverting/ NOT hiking the PCT. she also didnt really plan some things very well, such as the need for more money than she had every time she diverted off the path to towns and wanted to eat/ sleep/ shower/ etc. the book got a little redundant and repetitive with the amount of time she spent discussing her grief and complaining about how bad her feet hurt and i could have definitely done without such graphic detail of one particular scene (view spoiler) aside from those minor things it was actually interesting and a little inspiring. i think it would be really cool to do something like this, though there is no way i would ever consider doing it alone. overall, it was probably worth reading this. ...more
