I absolutely loved this book! Yes, it was a bit difficult to get into in the beginning, but well worth the effort. Count Alexander Rostov is placed under house arrest at the elegant Metro Hotel, it's 1922, the Bolsheviks are in power and he is an unrepentant aristocrat, he is moved from his lavish suite to the attic from which he adapts to his new life and we are taken down a memorable road learning much about Russian history, the enchanting characters, his positive acceptance of his circumstanc

so my opinion differs from a lot of other peoples reviews and this isn't the first time that has happened with a really hyped up book. i tried to read this for one of the book clubs i am in, but couldn't get through it quickly enough and then ended up not even being able to go that night for discussion anyhow, but still wanted to eventually read the rest. while i will admit that because of the lengthiness of this book and having too many library books to read at the same time it felt like it too
