Breathtaking in scale and something that I am going to be thinking about a long time. Many of the readings I did in college for History and Civilizations courses were built on the foundation of the (false) idea that agrarian societies were a reasonably recent development that advanced society to the point that humans could form large cities and from that naturally form authoritarian/hierarchical societies.
