Obsidian (New Species, #8) in Laurann Dohner

I listened to this book on Audibles. The narrator does a good job. I liked book 8 overall and loved the character of Obsidian. He is one of my favorite males. The story was interesting showing us a unique personality of a newly freed New Species male that had been isolated for years with only a mate for company; a mate that did not even love him. When 880 came out of his coma, he was afraid, but in true alpha male style, started ordering everyone around. He wanted the human female doctor that ha I listened to this book on Audibles. The story was interesting showing us a unique personality of a newly freed New Species male that had been isolated for years with only a mate for company; a mate that did not even love him. When 880 came out of his coma, he was afraid, but in true alpha male style, started ordering everyone around. He wanted the human female doctor that had kidnapped him in order to bring him out of a coma, because, in the beginning, she was all he knew. He had difficulty assimilating into the new life and I think he was using her as a way to remain isolated. I found Obsidian endearing. There is one particular hot scene when he strokes the good doc to orgasm in order to calm her. This is something he used to do to calm his mate. When you realize this, you can’t help but fall in love with the possessive, overbearing male.
I had a few issues with the story. The female doctor was a bit crazy in her plan to kidnap and then save the life of the New Species male. Especially, when everyone knows how dangerous it is for New Species outside of their compound. It was hard to accept that a sane person, no matter how well meaning, would do something to put their entire reputation, career, and freedom at risk. Not to mention, the personality of the doctor just did not lend itself to such ballsy actions. She was a wimp by nature. Second, when Justice and Tiger visit 880 once he is returned to homeland, we are told that 880 sees Justice as similar in facial features and that 880 has seen his own reflection enough times in the mirror to recognize the similarity. I took that to mean 880 had panther in him like Justice. Imagine my confusion some chapters later when we find out he is Canine. This mid-story revelation really through me off in my reading and I had a difficult time changing my line of thinking. By then, I saw Obsidian’s physical appearance, personality, actions, and everything to be panther like. BTW, I think there are too many Canine stories in the series. The author needs to change it up. The book is still worth a read or a listen. I Love this series.
