I've been a big fan of Martha Wells for years - I think she's one of the most underrated writers in the fantasy genre. I was thrilled to see a new novel from her after a years-long wait, and I'm even more thrilled that the Cloud Roads lived up to all my high expectations. Great book! Not an elf, dwarf, orc or quasi-feudal faux-medieval grotty village to be seen; instead, we have the titular Raksura (sometimes-winged shapeshifters), the nasty Fell (ditto, but evil) and a whole mess of other "groundling" races sharing a world that feels like nothing so much as a Roger Dean-era Yes album cover, complete with lush forests and floating islands, and littered with never-explained ruins.
