A worthy effort by I.N.J. Culbard. This is a good, though not great adaption, of H.P. Lovecraft's quest-adventure. There are some outstanding cinematic moments, but this work is not nearly as compelling at Jason Thompson's version of the same. Completists will want the Culbard version, but if you're looking for "bang for the buck," I would definitely go with Thompson's incredible work.

Lovecraft at his most Dunsanian. And I daresay that, at novel length, he might have even been better. If all you know of HPL is stories of forbidden tomes and squidgy tentacled monstrosities that drive you mad and eat your head, then you owe it to yourself to check out some of his Dunsanian/Dreamlands stories. This particular collection includes the titular Dream-Quest (a short novel; maybe 40,000 words), Celephais and The White Ship, amongst others. A highly recommended collection.

Lovecraft’s fantasy is, in my opinion, a greatly underestimated area of his work. Surely if one were listing the best American fantasy stories, Lovecraft’s novelette, The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath would surely rank high. Lovecraft’s fantasy was indebted to the work of Lord Dunsany, but Lovecraft sculpted his own vision of wonder and fear.

I found this unreadable in high school, and it's even less readable now. As I have been re-reading Lovecraft now, as an adult, I find that he really is a bad writer. GREAT ideas! Amazing. But his style--especially his early stuff--is hard to read. This is 150 pages of word salad. Sorry, Howard. I love you, bro, but I just can't. ...more
