Shelves: vintage-sff, trash
The setting is reminiscent of Jack Vance's Dying Earth. Although, initially, I got a Darrell Schweitzer vibe from the characters and settings. John Brunner's The Traveller in Black also comes to mind. This holds true for the first part of the story. The second part, well, it was jarring with the stark difference in settings.
