Franky, I am quite shocked that Roger Zelazny was capable of such thoroughly craptastic writing.

Kind of Zelazny by numbers. This was apparently a first draft and it reads a lot like one (though it's to Zelazny's credit that he was still able to crank out a publishable novel without any major revisions). There's a distinctly Vancian Dying Earth feel to the world and its characters, though Zelazny lacks Vance's mesmeric prose style and the work feels somewhat dreary as a result.

For my first book by Zelazny I naturally decided to go with the one that sounded like a Jack Vance inspired tale. It was more unique than this apparent premise, however. A surprisingly effective high fantasy (not my favorite subgenre of fantasy) with a truly interesting high concept world as a setting. I will soon be going through more of the works of this author.
