In 8th Century Baghdad the Captain of the Jaffar’s Royal Guard, Asim and the scholar Dabir are dispatched to uncover the mystery of a rune inscribed relic. The Desert of Souls by Black Gate editor Howard Andrew Jones is a fresh look at the sword and sorcery genre in a Arabic setting full of vibrant characters, dastardly villains, and strange landscapes. As Minsc said best: “Adventure, excitement, and steel on steel.” This is also Jones’ first novel and is perhaps one of the best debuts, likely t

Not just a good sword-and-sorcery novel, but a good novel. Its skeleton is of a relatively straightforward fantasy adventure (retrieve the foozle and avert disaster) but Jones invests heavily in characterization--particularly into Asim's narration--and in a palpably authentic yet never overwhelming adherance to the culture of the medieval Middle-East. One never forgets that Asim is a man of his place and time (and it is refreshing to see a soldier who is also a simply moral person and an effecti

Fantastic book! I really liked it. I loved the snake in the Desert of Souls, and I really liked the inclusion of the cat-headed staff. That made a nice connection to REH.
The characters were interesting, and the plot twists were creative. I liked that the things that started the quest were door pulls. I thought that was original.

A great read. This is sword and sorcery the way I like it, with great characters, an engaging story and a great ending that makes me wanting more. Howard Jones has done a fine job. I can't wait to read more about Dabir and Asim.

Excellent first novel from a very talented writer. It's a pleasure reading a historical fantasy that takes place in another culture.

I enjoyed this thoroughly. Many friends commented that they found it to have a strong REH vibe, but I didn't really get that (other than the appearance of a certain artifact).
I did, however, find it highly reminiscent of the three novels in Barry Hughart's "Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox" series, which I consider to be some of the finest, deftest fantasy of the past fifty years, so there you go.

This is a highly enjoyable desert-based sword&sorcery novel. I loved it. Set in a sort of "Arabian nights" 8th century Baghdad, the story is told from the point of view of a warrior who ends up on a crazy quest to stop a mad wizard from destroying the Caliphate. Great magic that is not overdone; fun monsters, and highly likable characters. I got some great ideas for my D&D game! Looking forward to the next one.

Howard Jones has crafted a heck of a story, weaving magic, science, swashbuckling, adventure, and, most importantly, character into this tale of Dabir and Asim. The classic buddy tale with a twist and set in Abbasid Caliphate. The pace is expertly handled, never seeming to slow but never seeming to move too quickly. Read it and enjoy!
