It's hard to classify this book, both in terms of genre and quality. There is no doubt that Burroughs is an important, influential and remarkably talented writer (the writing itself is extraordinarily good sometimes), and overall, this is a book that I am very glad that I read.

For being 100 years old, A PRINCESS OF MARS has aged quite well.

Originally a magazine serial first published in 1912, then novelized in 1917, John Carter was leaping across the Martian landscape before the First World War.

I've noticed some reviews that have blasted it for its lack of realism. Please ignore those people. I'm not sure what they were expecting, but this story does exactly what it was intended to do. It's action, adventure, and when you consider its age, mind-blowingly original. A P

In this classic, Burroughs shows us what it is to be a true master of the craft. The action and adventure never stop, and the fantastic settings support and highlight a group of knowable and loveable characters. If, like me, you have gone most of your life without reading this masterwork, do so. If you read it as a child, do yourself a favor and read it again!

Aah, the classic! I really enjoyed it and by some of the values and views provided there, I was kinda surprised to learn the book was over one hundred years old. It also contains some really good ideas ("unbuilt tropes") that could be seen and developed in many other stories. The protagonist is of course great in everything, but at least it is given some plausible explanation. Also secondary characters are given surprisingly good characterization.
