I had an 8 hour car ride today. So I stopped by the library yesterday looking for an Audioook. There I saw a book I read as a child was narrated by my favorite reader, Scott Brick. I snatched it up. The miles flew by as Edgar Rice Burroughs transported me all over again to Barsoom, a world that enraptured me as a youngster, and like many that have gone before me, inspired me to start concocting adventures of my own.

The first of the Mars books.

The opening's a bit marred by the conventions of the day -- explaining how Burroughs got his hands on the story. And the transition to Mars is not smooth on either end. (Personally, I would have given him some sort of Martian connections and had him transported by their tech, but Burroughs did not have the advantage of working in a field with many developed tropes.)

Aah, the classic! I really enjoyed it and by some of the values and views provided there, I was kinda surprised to learn the book was over one hundred years old. It also contains some really good ideas ("unbuilt tropes") that could be seen and developed in many other stories. The protagonist is of course great in everything, but at least it is given some plausible explanation. Also secondary characters are given surprisingly good characterization. The ending was annoying, less so the cliffhanger ...more
