Ridiculously good. Even though fantasy and science fiction offer authors the chance to create their own worlds, their own cultures and institutions, somehow most of what's on the shelf is boilerplate. I suffer through the awful stuff in hopes of occasionally finding something like Tehanu, something written by someone who actually understands how cultures work, how people work, and in this case addresses gender issues head-on.
