If you look at the order of publication (see the website of Moorcock's Miscallany for details), this is the second collection of Elric stories, preceded in the U.S. by The Stealer of Souls, and this is the first one to tell a cohesive, novel-length story. Taking these two as the essential body, you have something different than the flabby construction adorning several large collected volumes today.

I like Elric and I think Moorcock is a very fine writer. Along about this time though I remember reading something by Moorcock about how he'd tried hard to make Elric completely different from Conan. He achieved that, but the underlying goal seemed at times to be to create a character who completely lacked Conan's decisiveness. And that means the character comes across as somewhat wishywashy at times.

The final novel of the Elric saga makes manifest what the reader has known all along: Elric is just a pair of hands for Stormbringer the Runesword to work its will. The weapon controls events, the man is the tool.
