There is nothing worse than when you are reading a very interesting book and suddenly near the end it deteriorates into a common, overused idea! You are jarred out of the wonderful reading groove you were in, your brain going blank for a moment. Then it sinks in. The book you had been enjoying so much has transformed into something you've seen in countless movies! And you flip a few pages, reading, hoping it wouldn't do that but yeah, it IS doing that. And that's awful because this book had really gripped me!

This is the story about a haunted house. Four authors who write horror are invited to visit the old abandoned house to film something for a very popular website. Will they see something? Of course things don't go exactly as planned...and things start going weird.

What I had liked about this book (before the end had devolved into an overused idea) was that it was a character driven story. And that it was different. Each of the characters, especially Sam and Moore, had their own dark pasts. And it was because of those pasts that made them write horror. Perhaps the writing process helped them deal with the awful things they had lived through.

Another thing I had liked was the uncertainty about the house itself. Was it really haunted or was the spooky events just in the minds of the characters? The plot was mysterious enough that you were uncertain for a decent amount of the book. Then later once it becomes clear you had a different problem to deal with.

But it really was the characters themselves I had really liked. Even Moore. At first I hadn't liked her at all because I had thought she was too pushy and rude, but later she had stood up for the others and my opinion of her had changed.

But the ending was awful! And I don't mind reading violence...but I prefer something more original?

I also found the term "tallgrass" in here weird. Why not call it "prairie grass" or something? Or use the name of the exact species of grass? ...more

I don’t hate it, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped I will, but I couldn’t stop reading either.

It’s like a merge of all American horror movie stereotypes you can think of, with an ending that doesn’t answer the questions raised, in fact I got more confused as to what is happening and why the more I read through the last chapters.

Definitely a book written with a movie or a TV series in mind.

I can't tell how I feel about this. The first half, little over the first half was pretty great. I really felt for most of the characters but then the second half was just to out of character.

Liked: The characters for the most part. I was always routing for my fellow Midwesterner.

Liked: the details, it didn't bore me or feel bogged down. It sucked me into the story.

Dislike: Separating? Uhhhhhm.... How could they ALL have been that dumb? That killed it for me.
