Shelves: retellings, faeries

i have read this book before but when i went into it my pre thoughts was that i was going to hate it and so.. i didn’t hate it but i didn’t love it. this time i went into with a clear slate, no prenotion thoughts but gotdamn was this boring, this was just 400 pages of celena walking around the castle. i don’t understand how people read this in 2012 and thought “wow this is great” like it wasn’t terrible, i don’t hate it but the only thing keeping me going is knowing that it gets so much better. ...more

I absolutely loved this series despite how it all ended. I mean, the ending itself was fine but there were a few things that I wasn’t particularly happy about. Despite that, as I stated, I still absolutely enjoyed the books and the journey that it took me.

I absolutely loved this series despite how it all ended. I mean, the ending itself was fine but there were a few things that I wasn’t particularly happy about. Despite that, as I stated, I still absolutely enjoyed the books and the journey that it took me.

I loved Celaena and the struggles that she went through throughout the entire books. There were just so many hardships and obstacles that she had to go through that I can’t imagine it all being placed on an 18 year old girl. By the end of the books, she was 20 (or almost 20) years old. Those were just struggles that I simply can’t imagine facing. She had to deal with death so many times – both at her own hands and those of other people as well as facing the deaths of many close friends and allies. Not only that but she also had to deal with the fate that was dealt to her by forces she could not even challenge. And the fact that she dealt with them all as well as being extremely cunning in figuring out her problems made her such an awesome character.

She was such a badass in all the ways. Even just as an assassin, she was already such a badass and as the books continued and you find out about her lineage and her history, she became so much more amazing in my eyes. What I liked most about her was that she was always 50 steps ahead of everyone and I found it both frustrating and amusing to the people around her when they’re freaking out but Celaena already figured it out and more. At the same time though, I didn’t like how she never relied on the people around her even though they would go to such lengths for her. There were times when I honestly think that things could have been handled or solved differently if only she had sought out the advice of others. And because she didn’t, things ended up in going in such a roundabout ways at times.

The other characters were amazing. I especially loved Rowan and I want one for myself, thank you very much. His interactions with Celaena were so intense and I loved reading every moment it. It was amazing how well they complemented each other. Aedion, Lysandra, Gavriel and even later, Fenrys, were all characters I came to love. Okay, Aedion pissed me off for a period of time in the last book but I understood where he was coming from even though I did think he went a bit too far at times.

If I had to pick characters I didn’t love so much, it would be a tossup between Dorian (because I found him changing for the worse as the books continued – he wasn’t that happy and optimistic prince anymore and I found him to be a lot colder at times which was unfortunate because I liked his personality in the beginning even though I thought he was too naïve at times) and Chaol (because let’s be honest, he was an idiot pretty much 90% of the series – the other 10% was because I admired his loyalty and steadfastness to Dorian).

Overall, I loved how the author did such a fantastic job with bringing (a lot of) elements from the novella into the main books. I usually don’t find novellas in most series to be that vital but in this case, I would highly recommend reading the novellas prior to starting with the first book. Honestly, I just loved reading about Celaena and her journey as she learned about her destiny and her fate. Everything was wonderfully written and I loved it. ...more

This was a book that was right up my alli, I love fantasy and I love realism which is what this book did. Just because something has magic and champions doesn't mean it has to be completely out there in a different world, and this book is the perfect balance. I'm not going to lie, I totally ordered the second book right after the third chapter and by the sixth chapter I was screaming out my favorite quotes. If you like Game of thrones an harry potter then read this (the sticker isn't lying). ...more

yes i fINALLY finished it! Can we talk about how much i love Celaena and how she messes with Chaol haha Dorian can cHOKE lmao let me go read the others tho. This series is promising and i have a feeling it only gets better.
