Read for the Frisco Undead and Unread book club. Keep in mind this is a book I likely would not have chosen for myself and that is reflected in my ratings.

The book premise sounds interesting Indian Jones exploration, Micheal Critchon type suspense. So I figured okay I’d give it ago. There is little no suspense and even less horror. I can’t understand what all these raving reviews are going on about. It feels like a hokey episode of Ancient Aliens meet with the movie Evolu Actual rating 2.5 stars

Basically you have a middle aged guy going through a post mid-life crisis. He has quit his job, his marriage had fallen apart, and he is now running a YouTube channel searching out mysteries and conspiracy theories. They find a cave that was rumored to exist and then the plot jumps around to half concocted ideas and wrap it all up with an oh well ending.

The author typically writes screen plays and this feels more like a screen play or a bad made for TV movie. I could easily see this picked up by the scifi channel and made into a low budget film but they would have to add a ton more action and speed up the plot - oh and provide an ending that didn’t suck.

The main protagonist Nolan Moore is a pretentious narcissist and I couldn’t stand him. He thought nothing of belittling others, thought he knew better than everyone and even when his friends die his only thoughts are how and I going to explain this?

Also the dialogue- there were attempts at deep emotional and intellectual conversations, but many ended with a just kidding. It felt like an entire F.U. How am I to take anything serious when the characters can’t? Also there are several super long ramblings that read more like a conspiracy blog plucked from Facebook.

So we have found this ancient Indian site and low and behold we theorize (correctly on the first attempt) that it is an ark. But instead of animals marching in 2x2 this is a machine set to repopulate the earth if needed and animals march out 2x2. How does this work? We don’t know. There is a pool of water and we knock giant metal balls into the pool of water which contains the elements that make up life and poof snap full grown animals start appearing. You know normal stuff like mosquitoes, bugs, coyotes, unicorns, saber tooth tigers, pyterodactals, and giant humanoids because why not? And then just as inexplicable it stops because it wasn’t the right time to repopulate and the machine resets itself because of course.

Now of course all this excitement can’t be had alone we need an ancient evil society after it. The evil society has been searching for years and couldn’t find it so of course they reached out to the only one who could help. A Youtuber dedicated to the truth. One who at the end of everything decides maybe we don’t tell the world because we had to kill some bad guys down there and gee that’s just too many questions so let’s move on and not talk about it again.

Overall I was bored and my eyes were exhausted from how many times they rolled around in my head. Now to be fair it is readable and it flows well but 😩 not for me.
