Most people want to be good -- but we also struggle with jealousy, with pride, with evil. In East of Eden, Steinbeck explores good and evil and the gray area in between. He shows that we can choose our own fates and are masters of our own destinies.
In getting to that message, he also meanders through 600 pages of backstory. Sometimes you need lots of pages to tell an epic tale (like Gone With the Wind or Les Miserables), but here, I felt like the length didn't add much; it was kind of a slog unt ...more

I really enjoyed this novel. The characters were interesting and I was invested in the outcome. I was somewhat confused by the intermingling of the stories of the two families, at times it seemed it should be two novels. I enjoyed Steinbeck's style and was surprised to read phrases and words that I thought were more current in their origin. It is nice to read a "classic" and find that you think it deserves to be so.
