I haven't read a book so near to what is actually happening, although it's not as far... Yet.

What a fantastic story. The Handmaid's tale is one of those books that is rare and hard to define with words.

I loved the writing, the characters are sublime. I can't really find fault with this book. The story keeps you wanting more and more and hopefully for a good ending. But that is now up to the reader to decide. Woman's issues is the main theme, especially today, for a book written in 1986 it is q ...more

Shelves: post-apocalyptic-future-dystopia

I'm not a big fan of this writer's style but did find this book very interesting. It was not until the end that I realized that the someone disjointed method of telling the story was from tapes of that era that later scientists and historians had found. Ordinarily I would not really believe that a society could fall apart so easily but current events have given me pause. I was a little confused about the main character's age. She was clearly still in her child bearing years but her memories also ...more

Had a hard time getting used to her style of writing. Once over that hump the book turned out to be an excellent read. Reminds me a great deal of George Orwell's 1984. ...more
