This novella (50 pages) is more readable than Melville's famed Moby Dick. The story, centered on the passive and mysterious Bartleby, is not bad. Four stars. Three stars if you're not quite generous enough to award it four. ...more

Although I enjoyed the short story, the character of Bartleby infuriated me (but I think he was supposed to?). It wasn’t so much his refusal that was annoying, but his complete lack of willingness to discuss the issues or propose any reason for his blatant disagreeableness. Despite this frustration, there is still something that I quite like about this seemingly simple but deeply perceptive little story.
