After years of watching filmed adaptations of this story, last year I decided to read the source material with my children, then aged 12 and 10.
Upshot: We enjoyed it, which is a fairly impressive accomplishment for a book written so long ago, in such a different time, that is such a well-worn story in our culture.

This is a book that everyone hears about and has probably read or watched many times. I had managed to avoid both until now.
After all I had heard about it I wondered if I would recognise much of it as I read. There was some that as I did recognise much of the storyline and characters and that made to feel like I had read it before. But on the whole I found it disappointing. How can you not just love this story. I was interested in the reviews that were written back when it was published. This is really a interesting take on the author and the story it's self. Good read for that part and an excellent read for the story!
