One of my campers this week, a fourteen-year-old baby-feminist who was reading 'The Handmaid's Tale' told me she loved Stephen King and all kinds of horror. She only came one day instead of all five, so I didn't get a chance to tell her most of the horror genre is just a man's fantasy, and that Beloved is actually one of the scariest things I've ever read.

The writing is wonderful, and deep, and because it requires a lot of attention I think you get back a great reward meaning, however I had a real difficult time with the offensive language and sexual imagery which pretty well ruined the whole book for me. I feel this all unnecessarily distracts from the point of the book which is to bring to mind the hardship of the blacks during the era of slavery and shortly after.
