This is one of the novels that I studied while trying to teach myself how to write--how to interest the reader, how to show rather than tell, how to give such a sense about a character who never appears on the page. That is an amazing accomplishment. To create such a mysterious and intriguing person who never appears in the story except in past tense, or descriptions by other characters.

First Line: "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."
I'm on a good run with the classics. This is another one that lived up to its reputation.
The main narrator frustrated me through most of the book, though. I couldn't believe how much she let the servants run the house and determine her routine. I wanted to scream at her "You're the mistress of the house! You can do whatever you damned well feel like and be in any room you damned well want!".

I hoped that I would like this book more, as it's a much-loved classic and favourite of many. Unfortunately, though the characters are creepily fascinating (especially Mrs. Danvers), and the writing wonderfully atmospheric, I only got really interested in the plot at approximately the 3/4 point (view spoiler)
