Hitchhiker's, volume 1.
Earth is destroyed to make way for a bypass. Fortunately for Arthur Dent, his friend Ford Prefect turns out to be an alien and manages to escape, with Arthur.
The plot is not bad, but it's the writing that is fantastic:
Vogon ships "hung in the sky in exactly the way bricks don't".
The Hooloovoo is a super-intelligent shade of the colour blue.
The old man who said nothing was true but was later found to be lying.

I first read this book when I was in high school, back when dinosaurs walked the earth, people still thought digital watches were a pretty cool idea, and mobile phones were the size of a suitcase.
I enjoyed it at least as much this time. Humor is subjective, and I still find it bloody hilarious! If you don't enjoy Monty Python-esque British humor it may not be your cup of Earl Grey, but it still works for me! I wasn't quite sure what this book was all about but it has shown up on quite a few of the "Best Books" lists that I look at on occassion. I thought it was an easy read but the sarcasm got to me. It really was pointless and I don't feel any better for having read it. I am not a big sci-fi fan so I appreciate what Adams was trying to poke fun at. I don't know if I can be lured into reading the other books in the series.
