Janie is a character you wont easily forget. She is genuine and earnest and she lives within a compassionate tale that "celebrates rather than moralizes" (Henry Gates) life's events and people's behavior and decisions. Hurston's style is distinct of any author I have read. Her prose is beautiful and enjoyable read aloud. Hurston was a groundbreaking African American feminist writer of the 1930s and, thankfully, more read now than ever.

The dialog in this novel was so enjoyable to read. A wonderful story of a woman finding herself and love through the ups and downs of life. Hurston is a great writer. I found the change of voices interesting and helped make this novel great. My favorite quote is
"...you got to go there to know there. Yo' papa and yo' mama and nobody else can't
tell yuh and show yuh. Two things everbody's got tuh do fuh theyselves. They gotuh
go tuh God, and they got tuh find out about livin' fuh theyselves." ...more
