Quick re-read. This book stands the test of time. It's about evil and torpor in all its forms. It's also an unintentionally chilling look at how colonialism warps the victors as much as the vanquished. Since the narrator Marlow, for all his culture, is a racist prig and the European Kurtz more evil that the "savages" that allegedly corrupted him. At least if we trust Marlow's assessment. And as mentioned, his racism clouds his judgment so he's an unreliable narrator.

It's a lot more interesting when I re-read it (it's for class, by the way). This is just one of the books that becomes more engaging when you read it analytically and not for pleasure, because it's such a book of its time. Its writing style seems old-school and the subject matter repetitive when reading it in today's context.
It's a classic, for sure. But it doesn't mean it's exceptionally good.
Or maybe it's just not my cup of tea. ...more
