The 1831 adaption: This is the later-edit of the story where Mary kind of re-worked the plot to make Victor a more sympathetic character and it did not work at all! She's writing it as if Victor doesn't have a choice, but it comes across more like he's not taking responsibility for the crap he does.

I thought the whole part with him (view spoiler) was about him taking charge and finally accepting that whatever he does now he's going to reap

This was, for me, a mandatory classic. The classic movie with Boris Karloff deviated significantly from the storyline. I found it a bit lengthy at times.
