I have never seen a full feature Frankenstein movie, but I had seen many representations of Frankenstein as a monster. The portrayals made me think that I knew what the "Frankenstein" book by Mary Shelley would be like. Imagine my surprised when I read the book and discovered that Frankenstein was the creator of the monster, not the actual monster! I was disappointed by this. I understand that it is a character study of the doctor, rather than a monster movie, but I didn’t find his character as engrossing as it needs to be to draw the reader along. The pace is slow, and the philosophical issues which were so shocking and exciting back at publication are now little more than curios.

Almost a 4 simply because I got sick of some of the immediate repetition in the narration of Victor and, occasionally, the creature. This is a reread for me to teach it and I had previously read the 1818 version and didn't realize how different they are. I definitely think this is worth a read for everyone; very rarely was there any "down time" and I was always on edge to see how the journey would go. I love the framed narrative. ...more

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting. The story was interesting and kept my attention. I’m still a little confused though. I think that’s the point of the story. Neither Frankenstein or his monster are reliable narrators, so make up your own mind who the real monster is.
