I do feel somewhat bad rating this Fitzgerald book with such few stars. Here's the thing - I admire his writing style, and find it interesting. But that doesn't make me like his characters or plot any better. I completely think this is a great book to teach with (and agree that yes, it is a classic) because of that - you can often have wonderful discussions when you dislike characters, or even an author. Every time I reread this it gets better. Not quite sure it is "the great American novel" but it is in the top ten.

I hadn't read this magnificent novel since my high school and college days. At that time, I found it to be quite dull. This time, however, I came to appreciate the magnificance of this classic work. Perhaps it is due to my having aged a bit, and no doubt my own understanding of the time period aided in my reading this time. For whatever reason, I very much enjoyed this story; its characters came alive for me and I was able to appreciate the end of the era it so aptly portrayed.
