Upon reading, I was instantly I was drawn into the strange world Lowry describes: a world where everything was ordered and perfect — and strangely hollow. Being a new parent in at the time, I couldn't help but compare it myself to the parents in that society. Even though this is geared more towards middle school students...I loved it! I had actually never read this before. I like sci-fi type books that talk about utopian societies that ultimately fail! The scary thing is that some of the what Lowry writes about seems like it is happening already. All the authors that write about ideas similar to this all speak some truth. I wonder when people will actually start to listen to some of this fiction.

Summary: Little kid living in a community, starts to see things differently and has to make some hard choices about his future and his relationship with that community.

Things I liked:

* Short and powerful: I like it when a book delivers in a couple of hundred vs. 1000+ pages.
* Sparse descriptions: reminds me a bit of the glass bead game and Kafke's 'The Trial' I like the style as I find myself focusing more on what is written and why. With more flowery prose I sometimes find myself skimming.
