I was intrigued with the voice of the narrator. She was an only child with no family. She is a paid companion of Van Hoffman's. She wishes she could bottle memories and revisit them. She has learned to live in her head and really lacks a lot of history. She is naive and tells her whole life history to Maxim before she has had the benefit to leave his. Another example of her immaturity.

I thought it was a book that you could look at the characters in different ways. If you looked at it as a Freudian book it appeared one way. Literally it seemed confusing to me. But psychologically it made a lot of sense.
A slow beginning, but it improves as the story develops.
