The book had me discombobulated and in tears. I despise these Pavlovian responses in myself too! The scathing comments by the character's mother were remarkable as much in their nastiness as much in their erudition.
'Who knows what nasty surprises I left growing inside there for you, which codes I set running, Alzheimer's, Cancer?','You're a pointless waste of human tissue.'

*SPOILERS*
As far as plot goes, this is quite lacking, even if that is the point: going to the same job everyday, having the same phonecall every week, buying the same vodka every weekend. Nothing really happens until they rescue an old man who's fallen down on the street. And then, after that, the major source of excitement in the plot is upgrading to a Tesco meal deal.
