Wonderful story of a community in grasp of terror and gossips and the whispers which have the power of changing and destroying lives in the non-descript town in some part of Ireland in the 1970s when the violence was the norm and everyone might have mistrusted each and everyone.

Anna Burns deserves a medal for creating memorable sobriquets-Milkman, Nuclear boy, Make-believe boyfriend, Middle sister, Somebody Mc Somebody.
A most difficult read to begin with, but I'm glad I plodded on. She does blend in humour (very tongue-in-cheek) and one needs to be alert to pick it up.

This novel is about the informal sanctions used to control society and behaviour during the extremes of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. None of the characters have a name. They are described by the social roles that they play, for example, mother, eldest daughter and boyfriend. None of the places in the book have name; they are described by the role they play in that society, eg Ten Minute Square, and Red Light Street.
