I absolutely loved this layered story about Jacob, a young man who worked for a circus during the Depression-era. From the aspects of aging and reflecting back on life, learning how to carve one's path as a young person, and dealing with love, I think this book has something for everyone. I found the research that went into this book most interesting; learning about the history of the circus in the United States was fascinating, and I am so glad that Gruen added photographs before each chapter.

I really enjoyed this! Not my usual fare, and I learned a lot about circuses (given where I live, probably a good idea). Good story, and well-written.
This is the story of Jacob, now a 93 year old man living in a nursing home, and his time working in a traveling circus in the 1930s. I enjoyed how she split the novel between Jacob today and his reminiscing about his past. The characters seemed real to me and I thought the book overall was well researched. Wish I had this in paperback vs ebook to get a better look at the pictures at the end of each chapter. I'd give this one 3.5 stars.
