The reader should be very thankful for Tris’ joining the Dauntless faction. Though she was capable of joining many factions, she chose perhaps the only one that allowed her to become a bad ass bitch and get a piece of the action. A faction that would not have her be honest all day, peacefully gardening, or factionlessly cleaning windows and sweeping floors… oh no! Tris choose the one that’s actually interesting. The only exciting faction. Because she’s cool like that. Had she joined Candor she would have been simply required to always be honest. Yes, you DO look fat in that dress. No, that color doesn’t look good on you. It would have been awful. The book would have become a comedy. A parody, almost. It would have followed our young heroine becoming the world’s worst lawyer, as weirdly enough the writer seems to suggest lawyers should be the world’s most honest people. After all, it’s the only job mentioned that the Candor’s ever do. “Yes, your honor, my client did kill his wife. And no, he is not sorry.”

The book offers a fascinating and exciting view into a future city. The way it works, the twisted mechanisms of a state that is far from perfect, in fact in many ways gruesome, yet portrayed as being a near-Nirvana, a Utopian society. As much as we loved the book we hope and pray Veronica Roth never EVER gets elected as the mayor of Chicago.

The fact that a Divergent is treated as such a special thing seems very strange. Most people in future Chicago, in Roth’s view, are incapable of being both peaceful and clever at the same time. Or both clever and brave, or being honest, brave, and peaceful. For Roth it’s all or nothing. A very limited, sorta black-and-white view that does not come across as very realistic. With main character Tris’ being a special little snowflake because she isn’t bland and one-dimensional. And it makes her unique, the “Chosen One”. The Divergent.
