When I started the Sweet Gum Tree I knew from the moment I read the first paragraph that I was in for an exceptional book, and I was right. The 1st person narrative of "Alix French," the heroine, was soothing with her descriptive, velvet tone of life in a small Arkansas town. Her story begins when she is 8 years old and meets the 10 year old hero, "Nick Anderson." Nick is from the wrong side of the tracks, with a disasterous family life of only a father, who is the "town drunk," and who arbitrar

THIS!!!
Shit mother effer I am sitting here, ripped apart, so drained out and absolutely numb.
Whatta story!
Definitely worth losing sleep over that it deserves 10+++++ stars!!!!!
Full thoughts soon once I recover my equilibrium and until all the initial heartbreak wears off but in the meantime, I just really want to hide from everyone and continue:

I would have to say this could be one of my favorite reads. It had a bit of everything a story needs. The characters start out as young children and they develop from there, both as characters and in their relationships.
The very beginning of the book reminded me Boo's character development in "To Kill a Mockingbird". Such a wise young lady who had a crystal clear veiwfinder - only lacking in maturity and a callus life brings. Very nice.
I really can't do justice to this story, so won't even try. ...more

I did not want this book to end! This book has SOOOOO many emotions running through it, friendship, like, lust, love, hate, anger, sorrow, passion, loss, understanding…it’s CRAZY! It has such a wonder and beautiful story of Nick and Alix. I love how their story started at friendship and then progressed both up and down from there. Gosh what they had to go through and endure would cause most people to just run away and hide. I really didn’t like Lindsey from the beginning. I understand why Nick w

When the first page produces a paragraph like this, you know this book is going to hook you from the start:
'A sweet gum is the chameleon of wood, its corky exterior hiding its inner ability to imitate anything from cherry to mahogany. But its real value, one unrealized by most people, is its deep red heart, steady and strong. They see only the pale fibrous wood, easily warped, that surrounds the core.'
Firstly the cover on this book did put me off a little, but then seeing it was published in 200 ...more

I decided to re-read this book this weekend. I knew I liked it, but I couldn't remember why... I know, don't shoot me. How could I ever forget?
Now I definitely remember. I don't like it, I LOVE it! I felt so much for Nick and all of the trials that he had to deal with...
I hated what Alix had to deal with as well... They both were dealt a pretty shitty deal and tried as best as they could. I love that no matter what, Nick didn't give up on his love for Alix, and although it took him a lot of ti ...more
