I've been waiting for another novel set in the world of the Old Kingdom for a long time now, and, despite having moments that brought back the enjoyment of LIRAEL and SABRIEL, the long ago prequel to SABRIEL doesn't quite live up to my expectations.

I really enjoyed this book.
It has been years since I read any of the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix but this book threw me back and didn't let go until I had finished it.
Set 600 years before the Old Kingdom series, Clariel is a slightly selfish teenage who is thrown into a city not of her choosing. I’ve always thought of myself as a character driven reader. Whenever I think about the books I love I don’t usually think about the setting, the plot, the genre, the stylistics, although all of those things are essential to a good read. I tend to lock onto the characters and their arc. However, Garth Nix has me re-thinking that.
