The Slap is an exploration of the ugly truths hidden beneath the facade of Australian middle class. The slap incident is really only a small part of the novel, but provides a catalyst for exploring 8 different characters. The thing is Im not sure how to feel about the book. I could not put this book down until I reached the chapter of Aisha. That's where the author lost me. This chapter was boring and longwinded. The next one "Ritchie"was only marginally better. Overall though a good book, but far too much drug use. I can't really believe the amount of drug use, both in the "middle class families"described in the book and the school students. ...more

A very interesting book with some very human characters. I'm not sure I really liked any of them, but there was something fascinating about them all. The issues dealt with were realistic and ones you could imagine happening around you, but there were really no winners in the end. I must try and watch the tv show at some point. ...more

I didn't actually finish this. I couldnt get past character 4. They were all such bastards!

I just couldn't deal with it. I'm confused as to how this book as won so many awards.

An interesting look at suburban Melbourne that could be suburban anywhere. This book had me and my husband talking for days. Where do loyalties lie, friendship or family? Should you take sides? How much do your friendships influence your thinking?
