I had read the first book in the series and while it was enjoyable I was not sure about continuing the trilogy. I am glad I did.
This book continues on some 20 odd years after Sabriel and focuses on Lirael. While Sabriel and Touchstone are part of the story they are not central. What we learn is that Lirael is struggling to find her place within the Clayr. For the most part this is quite an enjoyable sequel to Sabriel, though it isn't quite as strong. Garth Nix can weave a good story full of imagination and suspense, and his prose paints a vivid picture. I am not sure if it is possible, but I think I enjoyed this one even more than the first. I loved how it carried on the story of Sabriel and Touchstone, but introduced new characters. Lirael is a wonderful anti-heroine who grows so subtly and so well over the course of the book. This book has no conclusions, you need to read the next one to get those. But with Mogget and Disreputable Dog, how on earth could you go wrong?

Mar 17 - Still reading! After almost 260 pages in the book, finally something happens because I'm getting sick of Lirael and Samreth's whinging.
Mar 20 - So all the action happened in the last 150 pages or so. I'm glad I persevered since I have Abhorsen waiting here as well. The book just felt dull in the first 200 or so pages, I didn't like Samreth's weakness and the character of Lirael was basically hanging in the air. I thought this was going to be a continuation of Sabriel and Touchstone's s ...more
