I love books that are set in the present and flashback to times past, as this book does. The present story is of a book conservator restoring an old Jewish book used during the Passover feast. Most similar volumes use words only, however this one is accompanied by intricate illustrations. The conservator finds fragments of materials within the book that she sends off for analysis.

I think it really deserves another half a star because there was much about this book that I really enjoyed but, without giving away any spoilers, I wasn't satisfied with the explanation towards the end of the modern story. Although I've read criticism of Hanna's personality I felt she was probably a true reflection of her upbringing so that wasn't a problem for me, and the description of her work I found fascinating.
