Michael K has no particular love for his mother especially since they've lived estranged from each other and he spent most of his life in an institution due to his hare lip and simple mind. Whether his mind is truly simple is up to the reader to decide. A remarkable story, somber, melancholy yet moving and beautiful. Elegantly written, Coetzee is a very talented author.
