I wanted to like this. There’s really no reason why I shouldn’t have liked this (at least none to do with the book, I don’t think) - it has books, it’s set in Paris, and then along the canals and rivers of France, and did I mention it has books in it(?!) - but I didn't like it. It was tedious, and more of a struggle than I was prepared for. A quote on the back says “A story that does the heart good” but unfortunately I didn’t feel like it was good for my heart at all. I felt unmoved and impatien

Jean Perdu is an eccentric character, but endearing, & I couldn't help liking him. Like most of us, this literary apothecary is very good at prescribing for others but completely useless at physicking himself. There are many amusing & insightful moments, & some quite irritating ones, so the book never quite lifted off for me: a pleasant way to pass the time but generally unremarkable. I absolutely adored and fell in love with this little book! The exquisite wording in some parts......the trip to and around Provence I can relate to having been there! So many emotions....love....death....inner turmoil..laughter.....food and wine! And above all Peace and Love! A delicious little read that I savoured and would love to re-read in the future, and I normally don't re-read books but this one was a little special!

ermm... so he hasn't "lived" in 21 years and then insta-love? eh, I don't think so.
I did like the writing and trip down the river but didn't particularly care for the plot. ...more
