This has been on my book shelf for longer than I care to think about, so it was about time I dusted it off and Gavin a go. This is a brilliant, bold and trail-blazing novel that would have made it into the cannon of all time greats had the author not rushed the ending. This book is the most salient example of how a character can drive a book. The way the author melds introspection, prose and drama is brilliant. The characterisation is also flawless, especially that of the sapphic Mrs. Danvers. This book has all the mechanics of a memorable thriller. Pacing, characterisation and suspense.
